Natural Break – Article from the BBC’s Staff Newspaper, Written by Rosi Crane, Colleague, Feb 8th 1984 “It can’t be possible – Joyce doesn’t seem old enough to retire!” These are the comments heard in the Natural History Unit at the news of Joyce Begbie’s retirement from the library. But it’s true, Joyce has retired after 11 years. However, she hasn’t spent all her time sorting out producers’ needs for film clips. She joined the BBC 17 years ago as a copy-taker in the Regional newsroom, followed by a spell in teleprinters. We’ve always joked in the office that no single person will be able to fill the gap when Joyce leaves. There’s many a true word spoken in jest, because terminals will soon be installed to help her successor. But all the hardware and software will be no substitute for Joyce’s superb memory, sound advice and special brand of common sense. She will need all her plentiful energy after January, as her large circle of friends and family will ensure that Joyce will not fit the stereotype of “lady of leisure”. We’ll miss you Joyce, but wish you well in your new role.”
